2010 Unit 22 Giant! 130" Buck!

I had Richard Sawaske from California contact me with a dream to kill a big coues buck. After discussing his options we put and plan together and got him put in on the draw in hopes to pull the coues tag he was after. Luck was on his side as Richard ended up drawing one of the best units in the state.

After hearing the news, the scouting began. I started hitting the hills a few weeks before the hunt in hopes to locate and re-locate some great bucks. The day before the hunt I ended up finding a 115” class buck. Which was a shooter in Richards eyes as he was good with pulling the trigger on anything over 100”s. Richard arrived at my house Thursday the 16th. I told Richard I got a good buck located but lets check some other areas and if it doesn’t pan out we can always go in and kill this 115” buck.

Friday morning found us glassing away when I located a buck which looked to be a good buck, but nearly 1.5 miles away. I told Richard we better get a better look at this one. So after a 1.5 mile walk through some rough country we got to the area we had last seen the buck. Its was now about 11am. We set up and instantly located 7 does and knew he was close by. After a little bit of glassing we found the buck bedded about 200 yards away. It was very hard to judge this buck bedded. I knew he was a great buck but being that his tines curled in, instead of up made for a though field judgment. I was first guessing him at around 95”…. 2 pm rolls around and this big boy decided to get up.. He walked out in the open and I instantly realized what we had in front of us, I was now judging this guy at 120”. Richard said this thing is a giant. He quickly set up and I whispered to him “don’t miss this buck”. I ranged the buck right at 200 yards and Richard made a perfect shot right through the heart. The buck ran about 50 yards and tumbled end over end right into a bush.

When we got over to this buck we were both in shock over the size of this giant. The mass is unbelievable, huge tines and an extra above the eye guard on the left side. We got him quartered out and in the packs. We didn’t make it back to the trucks until about 7:30 that night. It was a rough pack out but well worth it when you got a 130” buck in your pack.

Weekend scouting trip with freaky ending!

Myself and Nick were out with Jeff Hall on a scouting trip. Jeff was forunate enough to draw a early rifle 22N bull tag and hired Goodman Outfitters for a scout package. Sunday morning had us looking through the glass at approx 10 bulls in a canyon. There were a couple great bulls in the bunch that Jeff would defienetly be interested in chasing on his hunt. There was one that he really liked that was bedded and we waiting to get a better look at him. About 1:30 a young 5X5 stood up from his bed and started feeding. I told Jeff and Nick and we all were checking him out when all of a sudden "George" Started stumbling back and forth, We could not believe what we were seeing and were trying to figure out what was wrong with this bull! When all of a sudden he fell over and started kicking and shortly after expired. We could not believe what we just witnessed. After the shock factor and not knowing exaclty what happened, I got on the phone with Game and Fish I told them what I just saw. Dave Daniels with Game and Fish showed up and we hiked over to the bull. As we all got to the bull I we were all confused, Not a single mark on the bull anywhere, and he looked healthy as can be. At this point we still dont know how George died but Dave took some tissue samples for testing. I am very curious to find out the cause. Dave let me keep the rack, and I will have them around to share this story for years to come. This was the most freaky experience I have ever witnessed in all my 34 years in field.

Got my Mounts back!

Got my 2010 Archery buck back from Mogllon Taxidermy a few days ago. I had Clay mount the sheds I found to the same buck in 2008 as well. He made a pedistal with both bucks, and looks incrediable The Sheds I found in 08 scored 118" and when I harvested him he scored 129" after the drying period he nets right at 125". I would like to thank Clay at Mogllon Taxidermy for the amazing job well done, as always!

Garth Carters Monster AZ Bull

Garth drew his dream tag and hired me to help him fill his tag with a giant bull. I spent many hours in the field scouting and preparing for the hunt. As the hunt closed in we had our bull picked out. He was a typical 6x that would go right over the 400" mark. (will post pics of this bull soon). This bull was running with another bull that we named "Thumper." Thumper was a double main beam bull and had a dagger like horn coming straight out his head. The night before the hunt started Garth and I were staying close to the bull and lying in bed as we listened to the bulls crash horns in the meadow below us. The meadow where our big 6x and thumper roamed. The morning came and our big bull had disappeared, no sound or sight of him anywhere. We spent the next 4 days looking for this bull and realized we better get after something else. We had a few other bulls located and Garth had another one he was interested in. So on the 5th day of the hunt we changed location and Garth harvested his giant AZ 383" Bull. A few weeks later I found out that the bull that we were trying to hunt was found dead in a waterhole. He was gored by a horn and I am almost certain Thumper was the one to blame and it happened the night before the hunt. Bad Luck for us and a bad day for the big 6x!

It was a pleasure to help Garth harvest such a great bull and look forward future hunting trips!

Scouting Trip with a Legend

One of my most memorable trips out in the field is the time spent with the legendary Frank Gifford. I guided Franks good buddy on a elk hunt and after hearing all the hype Frank wanted to see what he missed out on. Next time Frank was in town he hired me to take him out in the hills to see some game. What a great guy and pleasure to be around. Here is a pic from the trip.

Massive Arizona Sheds!

My son and his buddy went out and did some shed hunting, and wow did they score! Here is their story...

I spent many days hiking with my buddy Gunner Goodman shed hunting on a weekly basis. We pulled out several nice 6 points and many other sheds, but none compare to these. I was out at one of my favorite elk/bear spots and i actually glassed these up across a canyon around 300 yards away. At first glance i knew they looked nice but had no idea what was in store for me. I hiked on over and to my surprise they were huge!!! After hauling these massive sheds and a few others I found all the way back to the truck, I took them straight to show off my findings. I had Gunner's dad ( Goodman Outfitters) measure and score them out. With fronts over 20"'s and a giant main beam they scored a respectable 383!! These were the find of a lifetime.

Two Giant Jr. Coues Bucks!

Here the story my son Gunner wrote:

Me and Buddy Conner both drew 23 JR tags. After helping my dad with lots of coues hunts in 23 I knew we would have a great hunt. Second day of the hunt found us looking at a great shooter buck bedded. After putting a game plan together we were heading up to get within shooting range when we jumped 5 big bucks, a complete giant compareable to clay goldmans buck for those of you that have seen it.. In the 140's. Unfortunately he didnt stop for me to get a shot but when he skylighted himself me and my dad could not believe how big that buck was. So after the shock wore off we figured we better try to get one of these other bucks on the ground. So we looked over the other bucks, picked out the biggest one and let him have it. He dropped in his tracks.

The next morning we went back to the same area with conner to try to kill the buck that I orginally was going after. We located him early that mornning and waited for him to bed. My dad took him in on the stalk as I stayed and watched it go down with Conners dad and my dads best friend Mark, They got to 300 yards and Conner made a great shot.

My buck scored 113" and Conners was 112 6/8" Mine had all the mass and his had all the width.

My 2010 Archery Dream Buck!

I have been hunting this buck for a few years and have watched this buck grow into the giant that he had become. I have spent many hours learning the buck and have also found his sheds from previous years. I was able to fullfill a long time dream connected with the giant on Sunday afternoon of the opening weekend. This monster 6x6 was taped out at 129"
